Professor Michael Cowley – Professor of Physiology, Monash University Professor 

Synopsis:
This session will present the role of the brain in maintaining body weight, in particular highlighting the hormonal control mechanisms that make it difficult for patients to lose weight and keep it off. In addition, a second speaker will discuss the currently available pharmacological options for managing obesity. Emphasis will be paid as to how to employ pharmacological agents in managing patient’s weight in the longer term, whilst discussing the role of lifestyle changes and surgical options to utilize the best available evidence in giving patient’s with obesity the best chance of success.
