Mr Ahmad Aly – Austin Health, will share his perspectives on weight-loss surgery (or bariatric surgery) for the management of obesity

Synopsis:New research indicates that Australian public hospitals cannot meet the rising demand for specialist obesity care. There are approximately 1 million Australians aged 18-65 years living with clinically severe obesity. Guidelines recommend these individuals be considered for referral to specialist care where they could potentially access a range of specialist treatments such as intensive lifestyle and medical interventions including bariatric surgery. In reality, a recent study by the Clinical Obesity in Public Hospitals (COSiPH) working group indicates that patient access to centres, specialised services, and treatments is limited by strict entry criteria, prolonged waiting times, geographical location, as well as out-of-pocket costs. Established in 2017, the COSiPH working group members along with a range of stakeholders are working on a broad programme of activities to generate evidence based policies and practices for improving the quality of specialist obesity care. Clinicians need to provide equitable access to a range of intensive treatment options using multidisciplinary team and long-term chronic disease approaches to effectively manage clinically severe obesity. Our task at this breakfast symposium is to discuss the contemporary challenges in the medical and surgical management of obesity in multidisciplinary clinics in Australia.
